Why Specify a Captive Bell Mount?
Bell mounts, also called captive mounts, are the standard choice wherever equipment must stay restrained under shock, roll or transit loading. The rubber element is enclosed between a pressed steel top cap and a base flange, and the cap is mechanically captured by the base so that the two halves cannot separate. If the bond or the rubber ever fails, the machine drops only a few millimetres onto the metal stop rather than shifting off its mounting. That fail-safe geometry is why bell mounts dominate mobile and semi-mobile installations: skid-mounted generator sets, containerised plant, railway equipment compartments and marine engine rooms where the vessel motion applies load in directions a plain compression mount was never designed for. The rubber works in a combination of shear and compression, which gives a softer effective spring rate than compression alone and produces vibration reduction of up to 95 percent in typical generator applications. The steel top cap also shields the rubber from dripping oil and fuel, a common cause of premature failure on open mounts in engine rooms and plant rooms. ABAW stocks the BCM series from BCM 10631 at 63kg capacity up to BCM 220105 rated to 5,012kg at 70 Shore A, covering the great majority of generator and pump sets seen in the UAE market. Loads are maximum static values per mount. Divide the total wet weight of the machine by the number of mounting points, then allow a margin for dynamic and shock loading. BCM 19066, BCM 18086S and BCM 220105 are supplied with a square base flange.
